Equine ocular diseases often result in permanent blindness, a disfigured ey
e or a deep cavity after enucleation, a disastrous outcome. Such an appeara
nce is of grave concern to many owners. An orbital implant (silicone ball)
seems to be useful in improving the cosmesis of horses. After the eye (glob
e and adnexal tissue) has been removed, the largest implant that will easil
y fit into the orbit is selected. The cosmetic appearance received a good r
ating by the owners. Complications are minimal (1 case out of 16 horses), a
rguments against implantation are few.
