Reaction of 2,3-dichloro-5-hydroxyfuran-2(5H)-one with triphenylphosphine g
ives (4-chloro2,5-dihydro-2-hydroxy-5-oxo-3-furyl)triphenylphosphonium chlo
ride. The structure of the product was confirmed by X-ray diffraction analy
sis. Dehydrochlorination of the phosphonium chloride under the action of ba
ses leads to phosphabetaines. Thermal decomposition of the phosphabetaines
was studied. Thermal reactions of the phosphabetaines with heterocumulenes
involve elimination of triphenylphosphine oxides or triphenylphosphine sulf
ides.
