Carbonylation of aryl iodides in the presence of N-benzylideneamines u
sing a catalytic amount of palladium, complexes gives 3-aryl-2,3-dihyd
ro-1H-isoindol-1-one derivatives, whose benzo moieties are derived fro
m the aryl iodides, along with benzamides; both the conversion of the
amines and the selectivity of the heterocyclic compounds are markedly
influenced by the palladium complexes used, PdCl2(dppf) [dppf = 1,1'-b
is[diphenylphosphion]ferrocene] appearing to be a favourable catalyst.
