Abstract
The decomposition of gamma-butyrolactone and gamma-thiobutyrolactone, through decarbonylation and decarboxylation, has been studied by the U HF-PM3 method: the results are in qualitative agreement with experimen tal data, obtained from gas-phase UV photoelectron spectroscopic studi es, in indicating that the main mode of reaction is decarboxylation fo r gamma-butyrolactone and decarbonylation for the sulfur analogue.
