Abstract
CMCs offer measurable advantages in specific strength and stiffness, but ha ve yet to overcome their relatively low fracture toughness. However, new un derstanding about composite damage mechanisms and the potential design bene fits of stress redistribution are, again, igniting the potential use of CFC Cs in structural applications. Engineers simply need to develop the necessa ry design framework, including an understanding of damage and a new approac h to Estimating-residual life in order to confidently develop applications for CFCCs. This note shows that oxidation resistant high temperature, damag e-tolerant CFCCs are currently available.
