Abstract
3-deoxy-D-glycero-pentulose, 1, is an uncommon keto sugar which was sh own to be an useful starting material for the synthesis of the mono-su bstituted prolinol 2. The simple reactions selected and optimised to t ransform 1 into 2, make the new synthetic approach an interesting alte rnative to the already described methods for the proline ring formatio n.
