The catalytic decomposition of H2O2 in the presence of SiO2-supported amorp
hous and colloidal FeO(OH) is studied. An inactive Fe(IV) compound and a Fe
(III) peroxo complex are found in the hydroxide composition. Possible mecha
nisms are discussed for H2O2 decomposition involving no free radicals. It i
s shown that lower hydrocarbons are oxidized in the systems, and their pres
ence changes both the kinetics of H2O2 decomposition and the behavior of Fe
(IV) and the peroxo complex.
