The macrotexture and mechanical properties of porous Al2O3/Al metal ceramic
s prepared by the hydrothermal treatment of aluminum powder in a closed spa
ce are studied using gravimetry, pycnometry, mercury porosimetry, and scann
ing electron microscopy. Analytical expressions that relate the porosity, d
ensity, and mechanical strength of parent materials and final products to t
he composite synthesis conditions are derived.
