This paper summarizes the results obtained in the MICAT project for mild st
eel specimens exposed for 1 to 4 years in 47 marine atmospheres in the Iber
o-American region. All these atmospheres were characterized for climatology
, pollution and corrosion rates according to ISO standards. Complementary m
orphological and chemical characterization of the steel corrosion product l
ayers (SCPLs) formed in these atmospheres was carried out. The overall anal
ysis of results contributes to understanding, in a systematic way, how atmo
spheric corrosivity categories can be correlated with corrosion mechanisms.
Special aspects of the atmospheres, from pure to mixed marine, were consid
ered.
