The ZrO2 and alpha -Fe2O3 powders were sintered at 1200 degreesC and then a
ged at 850 degreesC for 4-600 h in air to study the precipitation of iron z
irconate from alpha -Fe2O3 oversaturated with Zr4+ by analytical electron m
icroscopy. The Guinier-Preston (G.P.) zone formed within 100 h and then dis
k-like precipitate variants of iron zirconate (Fe/Zr similar to 1:1 in atom
ic ratio) were found to nucleate on the habit plane {10 (1) over bar4} of t
he hematite matrix after 300 h. The iron zirconate probably possesses monoc
linic crystallographic symmetry according to electron diffraction and the s
hape characteristics. (C) 2001 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.
