The effect of annealing (up to 750 degreesC) on the structural perfection o
f stable quasicrystals has been studied, for the first time, in large grain
s of the icosahedral Al-Pd-Mn phase. This study was performed by combined s
ynchrotron X-ray diffractometry and imaging techniques. It has revealed tha
t the quasicrystalline quality improves as long as no precipitates are form
ed. The improvement was mainly ascribed to the relaxation of the strain fie
ld around voids, which are often observed in quasicrystals after growth. (C
