Differently prepared surfaces of quasicrystalline icosahedral Al-Pd-Mn cut
perpendicularly to a five-fold symmetry axis are analysed using angle-resol
ved photoemission in the X-ray and in the ultraviolet range of photon energ
ies, in order to study the geometrical and electronic structure, respective
ly. Depending on the preparation, we find both, surfaces with crystalline s
tructure, metallic character and surfaces with quasicrystalline structural
fingerprints and a suppressed density of states at the Fermi level compatib
