This work aims to examine solid contaminants and wear particles in lubricat
ing oils by Ferrographic oil analysis. Oil samples taken from internal comb
ustion engines, gear boxes, gas turbines and hydraulic machinery have been
examined. Ferrography as one Of the analytical methods designed to quantify
wear and contaminant particles circulating in the oils, introduces mean of
monitoring Me wear process, indicating wear mechanism and detecting wear a
bnormality.
The photomicrographs of Ferrograms, prepared from oil samples taken from di
fferent machinery and illustrated in this work, provide specific informatio
n to identify the wear and solid particles contaminated in lubricating oils
. The visual inspection of those particles by microscope can describe the w
ear mechanism which generates those particles, detect the transfer from one
wear mechanism to the other and identify, the abnormality of wear. The ava
ilable information cart help in the study of tribological problems such as
friction, wear and lubrication as well as developing filtration technology
and testing both bearing and friction materials.
