Individual (4 alpha ,8 beta ,13 beta)-16-hydroxy-13-methyl-17-norkauran-18-
oic acid was obtained by reduction with sodium borohydride of the tetracycl
ic kauranoid isosteviol isolated from Stevia rebaudiana Bertoni. The struct
ure of the acid was established by X-ray diffraction analysis. The reductio
n of isosteviol was found to occur with a high stereocontrol.
