The compound [Cu(Edma)](2)(Hg5Cl12) was synthesized and its crystal structu
re was studied by X-ray crystallography (R1 = 0.0513 for 2564 reflections w
ith I > 2 sigma (I)). The structure is built of the [(CuEdma)(+)](n) cation
ic chains and [(Hg5Cl12)(2-)](n) anionic frameworks linked by weak interact
ions. The square-planar coordination of the Cu atom is formed by two N atom
s and two O atoms of two Edma ligands (Cu-N, 2.00 and 1.97; Cu-O, 1.967 and
1.940 Angstrom). Two Cl atoms complete the coordination of the Cu atom to
the elongated tetragonal bipyramid (Cu-Cl, 2.908 and 3.148 Angstrom). The p
olyhedra of the Hg(1)-Hg(3) atoms are severely distorted octahedra (Hg-Cl,
2.289-3.601 Angstrom; Hg-O, 2.918 and 3.101 Angstrom).
