The effect of CeO2 addition on the microstructure and corrosive wear behavi
or of laser-cladded coating was investigated by means of scanning electron
microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, energy dis
persive X-ray analysis and microhardness testing. The results showed that a
small amount of CeO2 added to the cladded coatings can accelerate the diss
olution of tungsten carbide particles and make their shape smooth. Adding C
eO2 can also hasten the spheroidization of the eutectic structure in laser-
cladded coating. There is an optimum addition amount of CeO2 to laser-cladd
ed coating, with which the coating has excellent resistance to corrosive we
ar, while a less or excessive addition amount of CeO2 will decrease the res
istance to corrosive wear of the coatings. (C) 2000 Elsevier Science B.V. A
