In Dying and Commemorating in the Environs of Bruges 1900-2000' special att
ention is paid to one suburb because in Sint-Kruis several classed ended up
on the same place, though in a different way. The local population has bee
n buried in its churchyard(s) but the upper class of the city also used to
have their (monumental) family-vaults over there. This survey deals with on
es ultimate moments and with a wider range of related aspects as well (omen
s, taboos and symbolism, patron saints and prayers, transport and disposal,
funeral rites, commemoration, etc.) and is based on printed papers, manusc
ripts, pictures, tapes and interviews. In the last century there were a lot
of noteworthy changes, esp. since the fifties (the welfare state) and the s
ixties (the Vatican Council) and the situation keeps changing.
