A quarter-wave retardation was obtained by mechanically induced stress
in a Nd:YAG laser rod and a laser gain of 1.15 at 1064 nm was obtaine
d by pumping with a quasi-CW 300 W laser-diode array at 808 nm. The la
ser rod was held in a brass heatsink in which the mechanical stress wa
s induced horizontally by means of screws. The effective quarter-wave
area was measured to be 1 mm (vertical) x 2 mm (horizontal) in the cen
ter of the 4 mm-diameter Nd:YAG rod by means of a newly constructed po
larimeter.
