This paper examines housing adjustment choice of households in Kumasi, Ghan
a. When a household is dissatisfied with its housing, it can choose to move
elsewhere, improve the current dwelling, or neither. Using data from a 596
-household survey collected in 1996, logistic regressions are used to exami
ne the determinants of this choice. Results suggest that housing satisfacti
on and quality, plus some household characteristics, influence the choice o
f undertaking housing adjustment (including moving and improving). When a h
ousehold decides to adjust, factors affecting the choice between moving and
improving are housing conditions, tenure, household characteristics, and u
sing housing for income generation through informal-sector activities.
