Ca. Insko et al., Interindividual-intergroup discontinuity reduction through the anticipation of future interaction, J PERS SOC, 80(1), 2001, pp. 95-111
Consistent with the role of a long-term perspective in reducing the tendenc
y of intergroup relations to be more competitive than interindividual relat
ions in the context of noncorrespondent outcomes, an experiment demonstrate
d that anticipated future interaction reduced intergroup but not interindiv
idual competitiveness. Further results indicated that the effect was presen
t only for groups composed of members high in abstractness (Openness-Intell
ect on the Big 5 Inventory and Intuition on the Myers-Briggs Type Inventory
) who trusted their opponents.
