Ga. Ki-zerbo et al., Enterobacteriaceae bacteriemia in human deficiency virus seropositive in patients at Bobo-Dioulasso hospital (Burkina Faso): study of 26 cases., MED MAL INF, 30(12), 2000, pp. 753-756
Objective - The authors had for aim to assess the occurrence, the clinical
and bacteriological features, and the outcome of Enterobacteriaceae bactere
mia in HIV patients, in the Bobo-Dioulasso Hospital.
Material and methods -A retrospective study of HIV seropositive adult in-pa
tients admitted from December 1994 to January 1996 was carried out
Results - Twenty six cases of Enterobacteriaceae bacteremia associated with
HIV infection were observed The sex-ratio was 2.7 and the mean age was 34
years. These 26 cases represent 5.7% of HIV in-patients over the study time
. Fever; diarrhea, wasting, and oral thrush were the main clinical findings
. Salmonella typhi and Salmonella paratyphi made up 76.9% of the isolates.
E. coli was found in three cases (11.5%). K. pneumoniae, S. flexneri, H. al
vei were isolated once respectively (3.84%). Sensibility of salmonella spec
ies to antibiotics was good. Other gram negative isolates were often resist
ant to Aminopenicillins. Associated diseases account for the high mortality
(53%). (C) 2000 Editions scientifiques et medicales Elsevier SAS.
