This paper explains and compares four different technologies used for piped
pneumatic transportation of hulk materials within the aluminium smelter at
Holyhead, North Wales, and gives guidance for the selection of future syst
ems. The differences in system design and operation are surveyed, the relat
ive advantages and disadvantages identified in practical operation are disc
ussed, and the energy consumptions of the different systems are compared. I
n addition, comparisons are made to the alternatives, i.e. mechanical conve
ying systems. Finally, conclusions are drawn as to what lessons may be lear
ned in regard to choosing, operating and maintaining a system for the conve
ying of abrasive materials.
