The general problem of instantaneous frequency estimation of a polynomial p
hase signal and the capabilities of the two time-frequency distributions lo
cal polynomial-time-frequency transform (LPTFT) and pseudo-l-Wigner distrib
ution (PLWD) are demonstrated by considering an ideal time-frequency distri
bution. This shows how we can take advantage of the different linearity pro
perties of the distributions and also how we can express the PLWD as a spec
ial case of the LPTFT. The LPTFT is very efficient but complex. This paper
presents a relationship between the LPTFT and the PLWD which allows us to b
