An improved procedure for the mild racemization of N-acyl alpha -amino acid
s has been developed, using Pd(PPh3)(4) either as the pre-formed complex or
by its in situ formation from Pd(OAc)(2) or Pd-2(dba)(3) and triphenylphos
phine. The concentration of the palladium complex catalyst required for eff
ective racemization is much lower than for the previously reported rhodium
based catalytic system. In addition, the racemization also proceeds more ra
pidly at this lower catalyst concentration.
