Condensation of phenyldipyrromethane with bisnaphthaldehyde 3 leads to unex pected formation of the scrambled 5,10-bridged porphyrin 5; this unpreceden ted selectivity suggests that an alternative scrambling mechanism to dipyrr omethane acidolysis is operating.
