Ak. Leventis et al., Diagnosis and management of incidental ureterocele during the treatment ofclinically localized prostate cancer, WORLD J URO, 18(6), 2000, pp. 444-448
Two instances of simultaneous diagnosis of prostate cancer and ureterocele
were recently identified. In one patient an ectopic ureterocele in a duplex
system with an obstructed upper pole was unroofed at the lime of radical p
rostatectomy. Surgical excision of the ureterocele wall provided decompress
ion of the obstructed system. In a second patient, bilateral intravesical u
reteroceles associated with normal renal units were left untreated. Complic
ations were not associated with the untreated ureteroceles. On rare occasio
ns a ureterocele may be discovered incidentally during the evaluation of pa
tients with prostate cancer. When radical prostatectomy is planned, treatme
nt of the ureteroceles should be determined by the ureterocele's size, anat
omic configuration, and location and by the degree of obstruction of the af
fected renal unit. Surgical excision of the ureterocele at the time of radi
cal prostatectomy may be the best approach for patients requiring treatment
.
