Abstract
In the search for new marker genes suitable to distinguish chondrocytes fro m osteoblasts and mesenchymal stem cells in culture, we have identified and characterized a novel gene called chondrocyte expressed protein-68 (CEP-68 ), harbouring an N-terminal leader peptide and an epidermal growth factor-l ike calcium-binding domain. CEP-68 defines a new family of proteins and com plements collagen type II as a new marker for stem-cell-based chondrogenic tissue engineering.
