The protective effect of Liv. 100, an ayurvedic formulation on the antioxid
ant status of erythrocytes in antitubercular drug [Isoniazid (INH), Rifampi
cin (RMP) and Pyrazinamide (PZA)]-induced hepatotoxicity in rats was studie
d. Administration of antitubercular (anti-TB) drugs for 6 weeks resulted in
a significant decrease in the activities of erythrocyte antioxidant enzyme
s with a concomitant increase in serum and erythrocyte lipid peroxides leve
l. The levels of serum antioxidants such as vitamin-E, ascorbate and blood
glutathione decreased on anti-TB drug treatment. Simultaneous treatment wit
h Liv. 100 reduced the inactivation of erythrocyte antioxidant enzymes and
formation of lipid peroxides. The antioxidant levels were also maintained a
t near normal in Liv. 100 co-administered rats. Liv. 100 by its antioxidant
potential reduces free radical-mediated erythrocyte oxidative damage.
