An account is given of recent progress concerning chemical reaction dynamic
s at surfaces. The goal is to elucidate the reaction dynamics at the molecu
lar level, both as time and distance is concerned. The methods of study inc
lude molecular beam scattering, scanning tunnelling microscopy, and (femtos
econd) laser spectroscopy. Systems studied include elementary interactions
of NO, CO, and O-2 at single crystal metal surfaces.
