Abstract
Former iron and steel works sites are significant in terms of their size, n umber, degree of and their wide distribution in the United Kingdom. They ar e likely to have become chemically contaminated with a wide range of substa nces from the manufacture of iron and steel, and the many associated proces ses. Associated processes include coke-production, metal refining and finis hing. Contamination by metals, inorganic and organic compounds, acids/alkal is and asbestos is an such sites. The aim of this research was to draw toge ther information on the contamination of former iron and steel works throug h a review of current literature and by the use of examples acid case studi es from the UK. The style of the is loosely based on an Inter-departmental for Research in Contaminated Land guidance note, with case studies and exam ples.
