The kinetics of overall devitrification of Gd(PO3)(3) glass is studied by I
R spectroscopy and DTA method. The results obtained show that the crystalli
zation proceeds in two stages. Initially an unknown phase is formed followe
d by the monoclinic gadolinium metaphosphate. The Johnson-Mehl-Avrami plots
give an Avrami index of 1 +/- 0.1 indicating that the crystallization proc
eeds via surface induced mechanism. An effective activation energy for crys
tallization of 530 kJ/mol is obtained by solving the Kissinger equation.
