The LBGK method with local grid refinement has been shown to be an efficien
t and accurate tool for the simulation of incompressible, viscous flows ove
r complex geometries. In the present study, further improvement of this con
cept is proposed, enabling the use of smaller amount of time steps on refin
ed grids without impairing the spatial or temporal accuracy. This extension
of the LBGK method has been proved by analytical and numerical investigati
ons. The gain in computational time was found to be significant. (C) 2000 A
