Abstract
Polymers were synthesized with 4-aminophenoxy)-alpha,alpha-dimethylben
zyl]benzene by polycondensation of pyromellitic dianhydride (PMDA), ph
thaloyl chlorides and trimellic anhydride chloride (TAC). Their possib
le use as aromatic thermotropic liquid crystalline polymers was invest
igated. The polyamide from terephthaloyl chloride (TPC), and the copol
yamideimide from PMDA and TPC, showed thermotropic liquid crystalline
properties according to the results of differential scanning calorimet
ry and observations from polarization microscopy. However, neither the
polyamide from isophthaloyl chloride nor the polyamideimide from TAC
exhibited liquid crystalline properties. (C) 1997 Elsevier Science Ltd
