Abstract
We have obtained accurate values for the electric dipole moment and static dipole polarizability of ScF In the ground vibrational state the dipole mom ent is mu = - 0.592 ea(0), the mean and the anisotropy of the dipole polari zability <(<alpha>)over bar> = 102.02 and Delta alpha = - 21.42 e(2)a(0)(2) E(h)(-1). The electric properties vary as mu (R)/ea(0) = - 0.590 - 1.139(R - R-e) - 0.058(R - R-e)(2) -0.056(R - R-e)(3) + 0.051(R - R-e)(4) <(<alpha>)over bar>(R)/e(2) a(0)(2)E(h)(-1) = 102.03 - 10.19(R - R-e) + 8.2 5(R - R-e)(2) -3.42(R - R-e)(3) + 1.85(R - R-e)(4) Delta alpha (R)/e(2)a(0)(2)E(h)(-1) = - 21.47 + 18.07(R - R-e) - 5.02(R - R -e)(2) +3.77(R - R-e)(3) - 1.50(R - R-e)(4) around the experimental bond length of R-e = 1.787 Angstrom. ScF is signifi cantly more polarizable than the isoelectronic polar diatomic molecules AlC l and SiS.
