C. Decock et al., Studies in Perenniporia. Perenniporia contraria and its presumed taxonomicsynonym Fomes subannosus, MYCOLOGIA, 93(1), 2001, pp. 196-204
The type specimens of Perenniporia contraria and of its presumed taxonomic
synonym, Fomes subannosus, have been revisited. In addition, some recent co
llections identified as Fi contraria have been re-examined, demonstrating t
l lat the present concept of the latter taxon is confused. The species is i
llustrated and its concept redefined. Fomes subannosus, though closely rela
ted to P. contraria, is recognized as a distinct taxon on account of basidi
ocarp shape, pore size and the width of skeletal hyphae. The taxonomic plac
ement of both taxa is discussed. Both species are endemic to neotropical Am
erica. All other specimens examined and originating from other continents b
elong to different taxa.
