Pb. Heenan et J. Cartman, Reinstatement of Clematis petriei (Ranunculaceae), and typification and variation of C-forsteri, NZ J BOTANY, 38(4), 2000, pp. 575-585
Clematis petriei is reinstated at species rank, being distinguished fi-om t
he widespread and variable C. forsteri by a number of flower and achene cha
racters. In C. petriei the adaxial surface of the sepals and the achenes ar
e glabrous, and the achenes are chestnut brown. C. forsteri has hairy sepal
s and achenes, and the achenes are usually light to dark brown. A lectotype
for C. forsteri is selected from the J. E. Smith Herbarium, and lectotypes
are selected for all names placed in synonymy of C. forsteri. Patterns of
leaf variation, with a strong geographic basis, are described and illustrat
ed for C. forsteri.
