Abstract
Vibration data from 420 individual passages of Massachusetts Bay Transporta tion Authority trains in a tunnel were used to determine the distribution o f the vibration levels and to demonstrate that specific cars producing rela tively severe vibrations could be identified from their vibration signature . The average and maximum vibration level reductions potentially achievable by alternative maintenance programs aimed at reducing the vibrations of th e "worst offending" cars were investigated.
