Abstract
Despite improved skills in the reconstruction of severe foot and ankle trau ma, salvage should not be attempted in all cases. Strength, stability, and absence of oppressive pain needed for normal function is unattainable after some injuries despite long periods of rehabilitation. Amputation and prost hetic replacements can provide excellent function and may be better choices of treatment after severe soft tissue damage, especially when neurovascula r injury is involved.
