Electromagnetic and elastodynamic scattering and inverse scattering te
chniques are combined to provide a better understanding of wave propag
ation and obstacle imaging in concrete. In particular we propose an el
ectromagnetic inversion algorithm for ground probing radar data to inc
lude information about the dipole moment of the antenna; a new elastod
ynamic inversion scheme is even capable of processing the complete pre
ssure and shear wave information as contained in the components of the
displacement vector simultaneously, where we compute the necessary sy
nthetic data with the numerical EFIT code (Elastodynamic Finite Integr
ation Technique) as extended to statistically inhomogeneous media in o
rder to validate the inversion algorithm. (C) 1997 Published by Elsevi
