We report on the heavy ion induced surface modification and clustering mech
anisms in amorphous graphite using SEM and Direct Recoil Spectrometry. The
charged clusters emanating as Direct Recoils - DRs from 50 to 150 keV Xe+ i
rradiated graphite surface are detected in successive energy spectra at lar
ge recoil angles. The SEM pictures of the irradiated regions reveal the eme
rgence of the reconstructed surface with periodic surface features. The DR
spectra have identified clustering mechanisms operating in amorphous graphi
te under high fluence irradiations at grazing incidence that are related to
the reconstructed surface features.
