A brief overview of techniques which can be applied to the problem of
radar-based classification and recognition of airborne targets from ai
rborne platforms is presented. This problem is complicated by small sy
stem requirements and by limitations in both the quality and quantity
of the data that can be obtained. Consequently, the true identificatio
n question is frequently abandoned in favour of broader 'categorizatio
n' approaches, and we shall discuss drawbacks of the various methods.
In addition, we will try to identify areas of current research.
