Electromagnetic remote sensing of sea ice is reviewed to introduce rel
evant practical problems to the inverse scattering community. A brief
introduction to the importance of sea ice and sea ice physics is follo
wed by a summary of direct scattering models where extensive reference
s are given. Typical inverse problems and models that use these direct
scattering models are discussed to provide guidance to potential rese
archers in the field. An optimization technique is discussed in more d
etail to illustrate several issues pertinent to electromagnetic remote
sensing of sea ice.
