An evaluation of the dioxins emissions from a power boiler fuelled wit
h salt-laden wood waste has provided insights on potential control tec
hnologies. Whereas a reduction in stack particulate levels does not pr
eclude a corresponding reduction in dioxins emissions, good combustion
conditions, in combination with an efficient secondary collection dev
ice for particulate removal, were found to offer effective control (st
ack emissions of 0.064 to 0.086 ng TEQ/m(3)). Regarding minimization o
f dioxins formation at source, a preliminary assessment of the possibl
e beneficial effect of an attenuated chlorine:sulphur ratio was encour
aging. A more accurate assessment requires additional trials, preferab
ly longer in duration, to eliminate any possible memory effects. Crown
