SYNTHESIS AND REACTIVITY IN INORGANIC AND METAL-ORGANIC CHEMISTRY
A series of lanthanide(III) complexes of the type [Ln(SAP)X-2.2H(2)O], wher
e Ln = La, Ce, Pr, Nd, Sm, Eu, Gd, Dy and Y; X = NO3 or Cl, SAPH = salicyli
dene-2-aminopyridine, have been synthesised and characterized by elemental
analyses, molar conductance, magnetic measurements, spectral (electronic, i
nfrared,H-1 NMR) and thermal studies. The elemental analyses indicate 1:1 (
metal:ligand) stoichiometry for the complexes. The spectral studies show th
at the ligand acts as a monobasic tridentate ligand with the phenolic -CO,
azomethine nitrogen and ring nitrogen as coordinating sites. The nitrate gr
oup is coordinated in a monodentate fashion. The ligand, metal salts and th
e complexes were screened for antibacterial and antifungal activities. It w
as found that the activity against Candida albicans of the ligand as well a
s the metal salts has significantly enhanced on complexation.
