Abstract
We show that the cluster model can be derived from the spherical shell mode l not only for harmonic oscillator interactions, but for much more realisti c Hamiltonians as well, which have dynamically broken U(3) symmetry. This c onnection justifies a U(3) selection rule for cluster states, and its usefu lness is illustrated in studies of heavy ion resonances.
