Abstract
Biblical quotations are of paramount importance for the homiletics of the f ifteen Catholic sermons preached by John Henry Newman from 1850 to 1873, wh en the Roman Catholic Church of England was undergoing drastic changes. This article aims at explaining how, in consideration of the analogies he d rew between the commented excerpts and the circumstances of their interpret ation, the eminent preacher founded his understanding of the Scriptures and of history upon a pastoral mode of actualizing, figurative and typological hermeneutics.
