Abstract
For over 100 years, binocular rivalry was seen as the result of compet ition between the two eyes, involving reciprocal suppression of retina l inputs. Now it emerges that rivalry reflects alternating perceptual interpretations that are represented in the firing patterns of cells i n the temporal visual cortex.
