This paper traces the history of multicultural social work in the Unit
ed States, from early assimilation approaches in work with immigrants;
to the present-day emphasis on culturally sensitive practice. It is a
rgued that the current model has limitations in the face of rising rac
ism and neo-assimilation ideology. The model should be expanded to tar
get racism, prejudice and ethnocentrism among all members of society.
The national and international implications of such an expanded model
are discussed.
