Abstract
Fractionation of an ethanolic extract of the leaves of Phenax angustifolius has resulted in the isolation of two new lignans, 2-hydroxy-2-(3', 4'-dihy droxyphenyl)methyl-3-(3 " ,4 " -dimethoxyphenyl)methyl-gamma -butyrolactone (1) and 2-hydroxy-2-(4'-O-beta -D-glucopyranosyl-3'-phenyl)methyl-gamma -b utyrolactone (2), and three known compounds, vitexin, isovitexin, and querc etin 3-O-alpha -L-rhamnopyranoside. The structures of 1 and 2 were determin ed using spectroscopic methods.
