A neutron diffraction investigation of glasses in the Bi2O3-B2O3 system has
been performed as a function of composition which confirms an earlier infr
ared study suggesting that BO4 tetrahedra are present throughout the glass
formation range. The B-O bond length distribution is asymmetric and the fra
ction of fourfold coordinated boron atoms x(4), does not vary greatly (0.38
-0.48+/-0.07) over the range 31-67 mol% Bi2O3. There are indications that
superstructural units may be present even at high Bi2O3 contents.
